Fire Claims Home in East Lake County

A Black Column of Smoke Filled the Sky from a House Fire in East Lake County

Eustis, FL – Fire claimed another building in Lake County Tuesday, this time in the Orlando Hills area of the East side of Lake County. Lake County Firefighters were call out about 1:36 PM for reports of smoke and flames coming from a home. When firefighters arrived, the home was almost fully engulfed in flames. “We had a working brush fire in the Paisley area the same time this call came in” reports Lt. Brian Gamble, Vice President of the Professional Firefighters of Lake County. “Crews were protecting structures and battling the brush fire that was in heavy growth, when this house fire was reported in Orlando Hills a few miles away. It definitely put a toll on our resources on the East side of the county.” Eustis Firefighters were also called to assist Lake County Firefighters with the house fire. “When you have only 2 firefighters on each truck, they have to be sure to rotate out the crews frequently in the high heat during the afternoon like today. You have to make sure they get a break and hydrate. You are wearing 45 pounds of protective gear, doing a strenuous task like fighting a house fire, and combine that with temperatures in the mid 90’s, exhaustion can set in very quickly. Luck was not on our side today” Gamble explains.

Firefighters arrived to find the home well involved and had started a brush fire behind the home. More firefighters were needed to help stop the brush fire from spreading to other houses.

Drought indexes in the east side of the county are pushing 500 or more. “When the (KBI) index gets over 500, brush is very dry and can ignite and spread very quickly” Gamble continues, “We have a lot of forest and woods in Lake County, and many of our residents like to live out there in the rural areas. That is one of the attractions to them. However, these areas can become very dry and quick to burn. We recommend to create a barrier by clearing out brush and growth at least 50 feet from your home and give us a chance to protect your house from wildfire.”

5 structures were lost last week to fires in Lake County, all on the east side. Four of the five structures were lost to fast moving brush fires. The fifth structure was a large two story barn that was lost to fire. The cause of that fire is still under investigation. Two firefighters were treated for dehydration fighting the barn fire, and one resident was transported to the hospital with burns to the feet.

Lake County Fire investigators are still investigating the cause of the house fire on Tuesday.
